What is a Worm Gearbox?

A worm gearbox (worm gear reducer or worm reduction gearbox) transmits power between two shafts at 90°. A screw-like worm on the input shaft meshes with a worm wheel on the output shaft. Each turn of the worm advances the wheel by one tooth per thread (start). A 40-tooth wheel driven by a single-start worm therefore gives a 40:1 reduction in one compact stage.

The teeth slide against each other instead of rolling. That makes a worm gearbox very quiet and smooth, and at high ratios the wheel cannot easily drive the worm backwards (self-locking tendency). The trade-off is lower efficiency than a planetary gearbox or a helical gearbox, so correct thermal sizing matters. Choose a worm gearbox when you need a compact 90° drive with a high ratio in one stage, very quiet running, or a self-locking tendency, for example on gates, turntables or small lifts. How to Select a Worm Gearbox

Output torque and speed required by the machine (Nm and rpm).
Input: motor kW and rpm (4-pole, 1,440 rpm is most common).
Ratio = input rpm / output rpm. Above about 100:1, use a double-reduction worm or a worm-planetary combination.
Service factor for shock load and daily running hours. Worm gearboxes must also be checked for thermal rating on continuous duty.
Mounting and shafts: foot or flange, worm over or under, solid or hollow output, and single or double extended shafts.
Holding requirement: if the load must never run back, use a motor brake. Do not rely on self-locking alone.

Installation and Maintenance

Mount on a rigid, flat base and align couplings carefully. Misalignment is a common cause of worm wheel wear.
Fill with the recommended oil to the level plug for the actual mounting position before start-up.
After the running-in period (about 100–150 hours), change the oil, then every 2,000–3,000 hours or at least once a year.
Keep cooling fins and the housing clean. A worm gearbox sheds its heat through the housing.
